WHAT: Come ride the beautiful clay roads of Thomas County, Georgia and Jefferson County, Florida and roll down some of the oldest intact antebellum roadways in South Georgia and North Florida. Many of these regularly graded farm-to-market roads have been continuously used since the 1850s. Riding here connects you to a unique landscape with a rich culture and a distinctive sense of place. Folks have been riding the clay since Thomasville, Georgia was a big part of the bicycling craze of the 1890s. WHY: Have fun while raising money for a very important cause. 100% of all proceeds from the ride will provide scholarships for children with Type 1 diabetes to attend Florida Diabetes Camp. These children, ages 5-18, inject insulin to stay alive, and at camp, they are able to engage in activities in a healthy and safe manner with trained medical professionals on site. This is a unique camp serving ages 5-18 from all over Florida. During the 2019 summer, Florida Diabetes Camp served 1 camper from Alabama, 17 from Georgia, 31 from North Florida. About 54% of campers receive full or partial scholarships and the camps gets no support from JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) or ADA (American Diabetes Association). Money raised from this bike ride will support older campers from northern Florida, southern Georgia and Alabama; these camps are under the medical direction of doctors and nurses in North Florida. Activities offered through Florida Diabetes Camp include sports, swimming, arts and crafts, and diabetes education and a special camp for cycling. BIKE RIDE SCHEDULE and OFFERINGS: In the morning, the riders are treated to a breakfast and coffee from Flowers Bakery and The Cake Shop. Upon completion, riders are treated to a lunch, and an abundance of cupcakes and beer (if over 21). The route map will be uploaded soon. We are so thankful to Hubs and Hops Bike shop.
